About the Friends of Los Osos Library
More Demand Than Supply. That’s a nutshell description of our local library ever since it opened as a room in a home in Baywood Park in 1940. During the passing years, the library moved at least nine times, with patrons and staff always looking for more space and more hours open.
The Friends of Los Osos Library evolved from the original South Bay Library Association, organized in the mid-1970’s by interested community members — who were also pushing for a bigger library. We are incorporated as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with the stated purposes to:
- give financial support to the library beyond what the county system provides
- let the community know what services are available
- encourage and promote literary activity and achievement among the general public
The Friends have been raising funds for a bigger library too. So far several issues, including the snail and the sewer, have stymied the effort, but there is increasing pressure to provide staff space, remodel the stacks, and bring the washrooms into compliance with the Disabilities Act.
If you enjoy our library and value its unique and useful place in our community, be a Friend! You will be supporting programs—especially for children—helping to buy books, and you’ll get a quarterly newsletter too.
